The Kaduna State Climate Change Accountability Mechanism (KADCCAM) has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the growing impacts of climate change across Nigeria.
The call was made as the world marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting ecosystems and biodiversity for sustainable development.
KADCCAM Co-Chair, Ibrahima Yakubu, made the appeal in a statement following a recent stakeholders’ engagement in Kaduna.
He emphasized the need for stronger climate policies, increased public awareness, and community-driven solutions to reduce environmental risks and strengthen resilience.
Yakubu referenced a United Nations biodiversity report which warned that nearly one million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction globally due to human activities such as deforestation, pollution, habitat destruction, and the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources.
Participants at the engagement noted that climate change continues to disrupt agriculture, food security, and livelihoods, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where desertification and erratic rainfall are becoming increasingly severe.
“the effects of climate change are no longer distant threats but daily realities affecting millions of people, especially farmers and low-income communities.” it noted.
The engagement also highlighted the critical role of journalists in shaping public understanding of climate and biodiversity issues through accurate, consistent, and solution-oriented reporting.
Stakeholders urged government institutions, civil society organisations, and the media to strengthen collaboration in promoting environmental sustainability, biodiversity protection, and climate adaptation strategies.
They further called for increased investment in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, early warning systems, and ecosystem protection to reduce disaster risks and safeguard vulnerable communities.
KADCCAM is a multi-stakeholder platform committed to promoting climate accountability, environmental sustainability, and inclusive climate action in Kaduna State and beyond.
