The Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has extended warm congratulations to journalists and media practitioners in Zamfara State, across Nigeria, and around the world on the occasion of 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
In a statement marking the day, Governor Lawal described the media as a critical pillar of democracy, playing a vital role in promoting transparency, accountability, and an informed society.
He noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” underscores the importance of safeguarding journalism in today’s increasingly complex global environment.
The statement, signed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Hon. Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa, acknowledged the evolving challenges confronting the profession. The governor emphasized that journalism remains a powerful instrument for peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and national stability.
He also expressed concern over the growing influence of digital technologies, noting that while innovations such as artificial intelligence have improved access to information, they have also contributed to the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and ethical concerns within the media space.
As political activities gradually build up towards the 2027 general elections, Governor Lawal urged journalists to uphold the highest standards of professionalism by remaining fair, balanced, and non-partisan in their reportage.
“The responsibility of the media at this critical time cannot be overstated. Journalists must continue to serve as the conscience of society and a voice of neutrality, ensuring that truth prevails over bias and that the public is guided by facts, not influence,” the governor stated.
He commended media practitioners in Zamfara State for their dedication and their role in bridging the gap between government and the people, while encouraging continued commitment to credible and responsible journalism.
Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where journalists can operate freely and safely, without fear or intimidation.
