A Presidential Aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has described the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria as a national tragedy unfolding in plain sight.
In a statement, Dr. Hashim cited a series of violent incidents across the country, including a reported terrorist attack in Maiduguri, the alleged killing of over 200 residents in Woro community in Kwara State, the killing of wedding guests in Kaduna State, and the death of more than 30 people in Jos.
He noted that the scale and frequency of these incidents point to a systemic failure within the nation’s security architecture.
“This is no longer a case of isolated security breaches. What we are witnessing is a collapse of responsibility at the highest level,” he said.
Dr. Hashim criticised what he described as a pattern of official responses limited to condolence messages and assurances without corresponding decisive action.
According to him, such responses have neither deterred perpetrators nor reassured vulnerable communities.
He also expressed concern over the absence of a clear and coordinated national strategy to tackle armed groups, protect communities, and ensure justice for victims.
“Beyond condolence visits by politicians, the security high command has not presented inspiring plans to halt the killings, protect communities, or decisively confront and punish those responsible,” he added.
The PDP chieftain further alleged that global attention has shifted away from Nigeria’s security challenges, warning that continued violence risks becoming normalised if urgent measures are not taken.
He called on Nigerians and the international community to prioritise the protection of lives and take concrete action against what he described as “daily massacres.”
Dr. Hasim made a strong appeal to patriotic Nigerians and global leaders to rise in defence of human life.
“Nigerian lives matter. It is time for all lovers of peace, both within Nigeria and globally, to take action to stop the daily killings,” he stated.
Dr. Hashim warned that the normalisation of mass killings poses a serious threat to national stability and public confidence in government institutions.
While extending condolences to victims and their families, he stressed that expressions of sympathy alone are no longer sufficient.
“Condolences are no longer enough. Immediate action to stop the killings is what is needed,” he said.
