The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has released former Kaduna State governor,  Nasir El Rufai, following weeks in custody over corruption charges.

El-Rufai had been detained by the anti-graft agency since 19 February 2026, after previously spending 48 hours in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He was later arraigned by the ICPC on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged conversion of public property and money laundering.

The former Governor appeared before a Federal High Court in kaduna, which adjourned hearing on his bail application until 31 March, He has denied all the allegations against him.

His release comes shortly after the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt, indicating that the decision was taken on compassionate grounds to allow him to attend funeral arrangements.

Family members confirmed that her remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Saturday.

An ally of the former governor and his son, Bashir el-Rufai, both confirmed his release, although the ICPC has not issued an official statement on the development.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have extended condolences to E-Rufai over his mother’s death.
