The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over escalating hostilities in the Gulf region, warning that the crisis could trigger far-reaching consequences for global peace, trade, and food security.
In a statement issued under the chairmanship of Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, the regional bloc aligned itself with the position earlier taken by the African Union Commission, which voiced alarm over rising military tensions.
ECOWAS cautioned that intensifying military action in the Gulf risks widening instability across the Middle East, with serious implications for international peace and security.
“The intensification of military action risks widening instability in the Middle East, with serious consequences for international peace and security in general, and for global energy markets, trade, and food supply chains — especially for Africa and other vulnerable regions,” the statement read.
The bloc stressed that Africa’s heavy reliance on global supply chains makes the continent particularly vulnerable to indirect economic and humanitarian shocks should the crisis deteriorate further.
ECOWAS called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and comply strictly with international legal frameworks.
“ECOWAS therefore calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to act in full compliance with the United Nations Charter and international law, particularly the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” the statement added.
The organisation emphasised that the protection of civilian lives and critical infrastructure must remain paramount amid the unfolding crisis.
It also urged renewed diplomatic engagement through established international and regional mechanisms to de-escalate tensions.
Reaffirming its commitment to multilateralism, ECOWAS endorsed the African Union’s position and reiterated West Africa’s support for peaceful conflict resolution, underscoring dialogue and international cooperation as the most effective path towards sustainable peace.
