Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika-Zaria, launched an Oncology Patient Navigation Programme aimed at improving coordinated cancer care and expanding access to affordable treatment.

The initiative, supported by Roche Products Limited, will provide cancer patients with structured guidance, counseling services and treatment coordination from diagnosis through completion of the programme builds on the existing NHIA-Roche Cost Sharing

The Programme, introduced in 2023 to ease the financial burden of cancer treatment.

The cost-sharing arrangement—established through a partnership between Roche and the National Health Insurance Authority—allows treatment costs to be shared among patients, the NHIA and the pharmaceutical company.

Under the new navigation system, patients will receive support to improve treatment adherence, access to psychosocial counseling and eligibility for Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing to ensure accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment.

Speaking at the launch, Roche Nigeria’s Breast Cancer Lead, Pharm. Funsho David, said the company’s goal was to make innovative cancer therapies both available and accessible.

“By integrating patient navigation into the cost-sharing framework, we are addressing not only financial barriers but also the clinical and emotional challenges patients face,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of ABUTH, Prof. Ahmed Umdagas Hamidu, described the programme as a significant step in strengthening the hospital’s role as a cancer Centre of Excellence.

“This initiative complements the financial protection provided through our partnership with NHIA. It ensures patients receive holistic support from diagnosis through full treatment coverage,” he said.

ABUTH is one of Nigeria’s designated Cancer Centres of Excellence and provides standard-of-care treatment for breast cancer and other oncological conditions.

Officials said the programme is also expected to support progress toward Universal Health Coverage by encouraging public awareness and increased health insurance enrollment.
