The deputy president of the senate, Senator Barau Jibrin says the legislative arms of government will continue to ensure effective oversight to strengthen democracy and ensure good governance.
Senator Jibrin stated this while delivering a distinguished personality lecturer, in his honour”Themed:- The Role of Legislature In Consolidating Democratic Governance In Nigeria” organised by the Department of Political Science University of Ilorin,held at the University Auditorium in Ilorin,Kwara state.
According to him the legislatures have the opportunity to contribute to the growth and development of their constituencies through purposeful representation.
He explained that the legislature will ensure checks and balances through execution of their legislative duties and oversight to maintain legislative independence.
The lawmaker noted that the idea is to promote transparency and enhance integrity as well as strengthen citizens participation in the democratic governance in the country.
He said a strong independent and accountable legislature is the requirement and the fulcrum of every democratic governance.
In his address the vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin,Professor Wahab Egbewole SAN, urged the students and other guests at the lecture to ensure they apply what was learnt to contribute to better growth and development of the country.
Professor Egbewole assured the determination of the institution to continue to collaborate and contribute to efforts towards ensuring nation building.
In a remark the Acting head of Political Science Department,Dr.Abdulkareem Edun said the department is committed to quality and progress of the country.
He said hosting the Deputy president of the senate shows the contribution of the institution to democratic governance ,adding that in every policy making effective implementation is key to national development.
Dr Abdulkareem said the department is determined to ensure that the students are trained towards contributing to the political arena of the country.
He appealed for the establishment of the students legislative chambers, installation of solar power and endowment of a scholarship in honour of the guest lecturer to strengthen legislative studies in the university among others.
For his part the representative of Kano and Hausa community at the University of Ilorin, Mallam Sani Ali said the guest lecture has been very generous to educational institution .
He said his character and patience has been his guiding principles which has placed him above his peers.
In her goodwill message the President National Association of Political Science Students,Hellen Agbudeloye commended the dedication exhibited by the guest lecturer to attend to the needs of the students despite all odds.
She expressed confidence that his determination and contribution would transform the democratic processes and ensure good governance in the country.
