Clubs, parents, and government stakeholders have been urged to work together to revive youth participation in squash and reposition the sport as a tool for discipline, agility, and mental alertness.

The Auditor of BUK Squash Club and chief organizer of the 2025 Kano State Coalition of Squash Clubs Inter-Club Tournament Alhaji Abdulhameed Yahaya made the call during the closing ceremony of the event.

He expressed concern over the declining involvement of young Nigerians in squash, despite its benefits to physical and mental development.

“Squash sharpens both the body and the mind, yet awareness among young people remains low,”

The tournament was organized under the leadership of Dr. Yusuf Umar Northwest Zonal Chairman of the Nigerian Squash Federation (NSF).

He highlighted ongoing efforts to expand the sport, including integrating squash into school sporting activities and increasing local competitions to create more pathways for young athletes.

The tournament produced champions across three major categories, Elders’ Category where a retired Deputy Comptroller General (DCG) representing Kano Club emerged winner, showcasing refined technique and years of experience.

Auwal Mohammed of Kano Club took first place in the mid age category reinforcing the club’s strong presence in state-level competitions and Yusuf Muhammad of Ado Bayero Squash Club clinched the top youth title after an impressive run of decisive victories.

The 2025 inter-club event, jointly hosted by BUK Squash Club, Ado Bayero Squash Club, and Kano Club, featured competitive matchups in elderly, mid-age, and youth divisions.

This year’s results reflected a healthy balance among the clubs, each showcasing emerging talent and growing enthusiasm for the sport.

Organizers and participants expressed optimism that intensified grassroots initiatives, improved facilities, and consistent youth programs will boost Kano’s and Nigeria’s standing in the global squash community.
