House of Representatives has described the support of state governors and legislatures as crucial to the success of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
Chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, and Deputy Speaker, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, stated this when the committee paid a courtesy visit to the Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, in his office.
Mr. Kalu expressed the committee’s appreciation to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for their collaboration and active participation in the ongoing constitutional review exercise.
He noted that the process had reached an advanced stage, adding that the parliament would soon vote on the proposed alteration bills to further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Highlighting critical issues in the Constitution amendment process, Mr Kalu, emphasized that Nigerians want a more functional Constitution that will empower the local governments, streamline electoral justice, strengthen fiscal federalism, enhance accountability in governance at all levels.
Responding, Governors Peter Mbah, of Enugu state lauded the committee under the leadership of the Deputy Speaker for simplifying the process and making it participatory through the zonal public hearings.
Governor Mbah, however thanked the committee for choosing Enugu as venue for the retreat stressing that for the time the process has been taking to the granular, getting to the details, looking at the clauses, line by line.
