The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has called on journalists to intensify efforts in educating Nigerians on the importance of voluntary tax compliance for national development.

The Technical Assistance Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of the Service, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, made the appeal during a capacity-building workshop organised for journalists in Kaduna.

She explained that the workshop was designed to bridge gaps on tax-related issues between taxpayers and the government, noting that the media plays a crucial role in sensitising citizens on their civic responsibility of paying taxes.

Also speaking, the Head of Kaduna Emergency Tax Audit, Mohammed Adamu, disclosed that a new tax law would take effect from January next year.

He emphasised the need for journalists to enlighten taxpayers on the provisions of the law and the benefits of compliance, which he said would help strengthen government revenue generation.

Adamu further explained that compliance with tax regulations not only guarantees sustainable development but also builds trust between the government and the people.

He urged journalists to simplify tax information for the public and dispel misinformation that discourages compliance.

Similarly, Senior Manager, Government Business Tax Office, Ishaku Ankuma, commended the initiative of engaging the media.

He said stronger collaboration with journalists would enhance tax education, promote voluntary compliance, and ultimately contribute to national growth and accountability.
