The Jigawa State government says out of 400 grazing reserves in the state, 57 have been gazetted to help prevent farmer-herder clashes.

Governor Umar Namadi disclosed this at the opening of a Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on Livestock Reforms, organized in collaboration with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee, held in Dutse, the state capital.

He explained that, beyond providing a legal framework for the protection of grazing reserves, the policy will also ensure the sustainable use of natural resources in the state.

The Governor said his administration has also recruited 300 community Animal health workers to provide extension servicesnto livestock farmers for improved livestock agriculture in the state.

“We have recruited and trained 300 Community Animal Health Extension Workers to operate 300 Mobile Veterinary Clinics across the state and so far the feedback on this has been very satisfactory.

“We have also vaccinated over 560 thousand animals under our routine immunization program, protecting them from diseases and enhancing their productivity.

“This measure has not only improved the quality of livestock but also boosted the income of our farmers thereby making livestock production more sustainable”, the Governor said.

He noted that the state government’s interventions and initiatives in the livestock sector have continued to yield positive results in the resolve to transform and optimized its impact on the state’s economy.

“As we are planning to develop a comprehensive and robust Livestock Master Plan for the State, it is pleasing to note that our interventions and initiatives in the livestock sector have continued to yield positive results.

“Our success stories in laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth include strengthening of our institutional mechanisms for early detection, mitigation and resolution of Farmers/ Herdsmen conflicts with focus on historically trouble spots”, Namadi stressed.

Malam Umar Namadi pledged sustained collaboration between the Jigawa State Farmers and Herdsmen Board and the multi sectoral stakeholder security committee towards maintaining peace between farmers and Herders to sustain productivity in the livestock sector.
