A Jigawa State High Court sitting in Dutse has sentenced two men, Hamim Auwalu and Ashiru Salisu, to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

The ruling was delivered by Hon. Justice Ahmed Mohammed Abubakar of High Court No. 4 after finding them guilty of conspiracy, deceitful abduction for ransom, and culpable homicide.

The convicts, both from Sabalari Village in Dutse Local Government Area, were accused of causing the death of Tahir Adamu Hassan on April 4, 2024.

During the trial, the prosecution presented four witnesses, who testified against the convicts, while the defense presented two witnesses in their favour.

After reviewing the evidence, the court ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The judge convicted Auwalu and Salisu under Sections 96 and 97 of the Penal Code Law Cap. P3, Laws of Jigawa State, 2012, for conspiracy and abduction, and under Section 221(b) of the Penal Code Law for culpable homicide.

As a result, the court sentenced them to one year in prison each for conspiracy, while for abduction and homicide, they were sentenced to death by hanging.

Justice Abubakar acknowledged that the convicts showed remorse, but emphasized that the law must take its course in delivering justice.

A statement by the Director of Publicity and Protocol of the Jigawa State Judiciary, Abbas Rufa’i Wangara, says the judgment serves as a strong warning against violent crimes, reaffirming the court’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for victims and their families.

It explains that the ruling has been widely recognized as a step toward deterring criminal activities, particularly those involving kidnapping and murder in the state.
