The Federal Government has unveiled a new technology, the Reverse Vending Machine, to enhance plastic waste management in Nigeria.

The launch, held at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, was spearheaded by the Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Abbas Lawal.

The initiative allows individuals to deposit bottles and other recyclable materials into the vending machines in exchange for rewards.

According to Mallam Lawal, this approach promotes proper waste disposal, instill a recycling culture among citizens, and encourages active participation in environmental protection.

He emphasized that the technology aligns with the principles of a circular economy by ensuring plastic waste re-enters the production cycle rather than polluting oceans or filling landfills. This reduces demand for new resources and minimizes ecological footprints.

Mallam Lawal also highlighted the initiative’s potential to create jobs, boost local industries, and generate economic opportunities.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, expressed concerns over the global menace of plastic pollution, citing its severe impact on the environment, human health, and the economy.

He stressed the urgency of adopting sustainable waste management strategies.

Commending the initiative, the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Mr. Julius Pondi, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to promoting good governance and socio-economic development in Nigeria.
