The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Malam Balarabe Shehu Illela has called on broadcasters across the Nation to be cautious and careful when airing issues related to National Security.

Malam Balarabe Shehu Illela disclosed this during a one-day meeting with States Commissioner of information, and Chief Executive Officers of Broadcast Stations in Nigeria held in Kano.

He said the commission was disturbed with the rate at which many broadcasting station were indebted to the commission in terms of payments and renewal of their licences.

Malam Balarabe Shehu Illela appealed to broadcasting stations to ensure timely payment of the license fees, geared towards achieving the stated objectives.

He noted that those broadcasting stations that were yet to settle their license fees would have up to 9th September 2023 to do so or face the consequences of their licence revoked.

“Any Broadcasting station that already have provisional license and were unable to use it for the duration of two years is automatically revoked”, the Director General maintained.

The Director General added that the commission was aware of the current challenges the broadcasting stations were facing especially high cost of operations and other logistics, yet their obligations needed to be discharged diligently.

Highlights of the event includes discussions, suggestions on how to move the broadcasting industry forward.
