As part of efforts to swiftly return Niger Republic to democratic governance after Wednesday’s take over by the military, Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu will on Sunday host a special meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

In a statement by his media aide, Dele Alake, the President pledged that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region.

President Tinubu who is also the Chairman ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government condemned the Coup in Niger stating that military incursion into politics can no longer be tolerated.

Niger’s armed presidential guards toppled the democratic governance power on Wednesday, detaining President Mohamed Bazoum, a situation that has generated wide condemnation sparked from the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, ECOWAS as well as the United States.

On Friday, the leader of the Coup in Niger, General Abdourahmene Tchiani declared himself as the new leader of the embattled country, thereby disrupting Niger’s peaceful and democratic transition since independence in 1960.

Speaking in a televised address, General Tchiani explained that the coup was because of several problems such as insecurity, economic problems, corruption amongst many others that plagued the country.

Meanwhile President Bola Tinubu, has deployed Patrice Talon of Benin Republic to Niger on a democracy rescue mission.
