Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ Borno State Council Dauda Iliya has enjoined repentant Boko Haram insurgents to at all times promote peaceful coexistence when reintegrated into the society.

The Chairman gave the advise while delivering a lecture to minors and low-risk repentant insurgents undergoing the deradicalization process at the Hajj camp in Maiduguri.

The lecture series organized by the Office of the Special Adviser to Borno State Governor on Security in conjunction with the Ministry of Women Affairs is targeting 1300 members to be trained in different skills for two weeks.

In a presentation, Comrade Dauda Iliya described the repentant insurgents as critical to achieving lasting peace not only in Borno but the entire country.

He charged them not to relent in searching for knowledge that would advance the cause of humanity and promote their means of livelihood.

The NUJ Chairman encouraged them to form peace clubs and associations in their neighbourhood so as to foster dialogue and harmonious relationship.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to Borno state Governor on Security Brigedeir General Abdullahi Ishaq (retired) said the “Borno Model” is a community-based approach of deradicalizing insurgents who willingly surrender to the authority.

According to him, 3500 repentant insurgents have so far been reintegrated into the society with any form of protest or rejection from communities.

The two weeks training will cover areas such as civil duties, tolerance and brotherhood in Islam,  community policing, entrepreneurship among others.

Similarly, Assistant Secretary of the Council Comrade Iya Ma’aji also presented similar lecture at Shaukari camp near Customs flyover in Maiduguri.
