Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i, of Kaduna State, has called on the National Assembly to make local governments autonomous and flexible.

He made the call during the 2022 distinguished parliamentarians’ lecture at the International Conference Center Abuja.

Governor Nasiru explained that in view of the current economic hardship, there was a need for the National Assembly to enact a law making the first 12 years of education free and compulsory in Nigeria.

On the current security challenges, the Governor stressed the need for an urgent establishment of a State and community policing system by the National Assembly to effectively curb the menace.

In a remark, the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan, said the 9th National Assembly had passed the most ground-breaking legislation in the history of the legislature in Nigeria and also the most misunderstood, especially by the common man.

Senator Ahmad Lawn maintained that few legislations passed by the house include the Petroleum Industry Bill, Company and Allied matters Act as well as the deep off-shore Act among others.

Also in a remark, the Speaker House of Representatives Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, said the 9th Assembly has been an unusually productive parliament, despite the limitations imposed by a global pandemic.

According to him, the house has succeeded in passing the Emergency Economic Stimulus Bill, the Police Service Commission Act, the Petroleum Industry Bill as well as the Electric Power Sector Reform Act among others.
