Over 1000 Cases Pending Before The Court – CJ

Written by Bunmi Abdulraheem

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, says it is worrisome that over 1000 cases are pending before the court especially in Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt divisions.

Justice Tsoho stated this during a special court session of the high court held in Abuja, to mark its 2022/2023 legal year.

The Chief Judge said the current number of judges of the court were 75, which was short of the constitutionally set limit of 100, adding that the process for the appointment of 15 more judges for the court was ongoing for speedy dispensation of Justice.

On its part, a representative of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, called for the establishment of a National Constitutional Court that would be saddled with the responsibility of determining all election related cases.

Chief Awomolo decried that many matters, including fundamental right enforcement suits, had continued to suffer adjournments, owing to plethora of political cases that were flooding the high court.

He explained that when the court is established, there would no longer be the need to take away about 500 judges from their normal court responsibilities to sit on election tribunals all over the country
