The United Nations says the population of people around the world has now reached 8 billion.

In a statement, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres attributes the milestone to technological advancement and improvement in public health, personal hygiene and nutrition.

The UN boss says the new height in population growth has opened a platform to embrace more shared responsibilities.

“The milestone is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet”, the statement reads.

The statement further says the world’s poorest countries are putting their development goals at risk due to their higher fertility rates.
