Rector, Kaduna Polytechnic, Professor Idris Bugaje

The Rector, Kaduna Polytechnic Professor Idris Bugaje has called for a government policy that will make skill acquisition compulsory in tertiary Institutions so as to mitigate unemployment.

Professor Idris Bugaje stated this during the Centenary Anniversary of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria at the Northern School of Survey graduation in Kaduna.

He explained that, there were about 100 different skills in the country, saying there was need for Government at all levels to train young people and graduates for self reliant instead of moving around searching for white collar job.

According to him, students should either acquire skill of electrician, Carpenter, Welding, Plumber, bricklaying or tiling among other Skills.

“The massive unemployment and underemployment we are facing in Nigeria, the solution is skill acquisition. Everybody should acquire a skill set whether you are in the university or polytechnic”.

In a remark, Former Rector of the Polytechnic and a paper presenter titled ‘Technical Vocational Education and Training in Nigeria: Past, Present and Possible Reform Strategy, Professor Ahmed Tijani Abdullahi said Nigeria can apply geographic information map to address insecurity in the country.

Professor Ahmad Abdullahi noted that the country was facing a lot of challenges due to lack of sufficient system to monitor.

He pointed out that, most of the people wrecking havoc in Nigeria came from neighbouring countries, hence the need for modern system of monitoring movement within the country.

Also speaking, Chairman of the occasion and also former Chairman of Kaduna Polytechnic Governing Council, Alhaji Yusuf Hassan said the purpose of the gathering was to celebrate 100 years of Technical Vocational Education Training in Nigeria.
