Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture (MOTNA), celebrates this year’s International Day for the Monuments and sites twenty twenty two with Gamai and Afeizere as the cultures in focus.
The event took place at the MOTNA ground of the National Commission for Monuments in Jos plateau state.
The National Commission for Museum and Monuments Jos featured the event geared towards promoting awareness on the diversity of cultural heritage, the vulnerability of sites and monuments, as well as efforts required for their protection and conservation.
In his address, the President of Gudom, Barrister Tordo Maiyaki stressed that cultural heritage is an expression of the ways of living, developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation.
In his paper presentation, titled Heritage and Climate Justice, Architect Gideon Bwans Kambai focused on the effects of climate change on traditional architecture in Nigeria and MOTNA with the view to reconstructing the collapsed structure and maintaining those that are still standing for the benefit of the Nigerian people and world at large.
The Guest lecturer further stressed the theme of the day, which is the rural landscape, noting that for long, it maintained a balance between human activity and their environment despite evolutionary changes and transformation.
In his goodwill message, the Director-General National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Prof. Abba Tijjani, represented by the Director Monuments Heritage and Sites, Victoria Osuagwu opined that, heritage and climate seek to draw global attention to the dangers posed by changing weather patterns across the globe.
The chairman of the occasion and commissioner for culture and Tourism in Plateau state, Tamwakat Weli in her remark noted that cultural heritage plays a vital role in initiating, guiding, and fashioning character and development.
The Curator of MOTNA, Rahina Garba in her closing remark called on the private and communities to key into the tourism sector to improve it , so that it will stand the test of time.
The event of the international day for Monuments and Sites featured cultural dance by the focused groups as well as other invited traditional groups, and exhibition of traditional delicacies to the dignitaries to guard heritage.
