Kaduna State government has tasked the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Kaduna Council to rise up toward addressing the trend of negative reportage and unethical journalism.
Deputy Governor of the State, Dr Hadiza Balarabe stated this when she received a delegation of the Executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council under the leadership of Hajiya Asmau Yawo Halilu at the Government House Kaduna.
Dr. Hadiza Balarabe urged the union to support the state government in providing relevant, reliable, and factual information to the people.
She said the call had become necessary considering the key role journalists played in promoting national development.
“We want to have that kind of partnership that helps us to give relevant, realistic and reliable information to the public”,
The Deputy Governor further said the State government had a lot of ongoing programs, especially in the area of human capital development but regretted that people were not aware because of lack of information.
She mentioned that proper information dissemination to the public would go a long way in improving wealth and job creation as well as education.
Dr. Hadiza Balarabe however congratulated the new executive members of the union, and asked them to work toward promoting peace and development in the country.
In a remark, the Chairperson of the Nigerian Union of Journalists NUJ Kaduna State Council Hajiya Asmau Yawo Halilu said the visit was to introduce the newly elected officials of the union to the Deputy Governor and also to deepen the union’s relationship with the state government.
Hajiya Asmau who revealed that NUJ had been a stakeholder in the promotion of good governance, also commended the effort of the government, particularly in the areas of education, youth development, security, health, and execution of various developmental projects.
According to her, the council is aware that government-approved N250 million last year to help women space childbirth delivery, described the gesture as unprecedented because no state has allocated anything close to that before in Nigeria.
Hajiya Asmau Yawo Halilu, therefore, appealed to the government to consider capacity training for journalists in Kaduna, saying it would have a great impact on its members.
