Federal Government has reaffirmed it’s determination in creating more awareness to Sorghum farmers on the use certified seeds and other inputs for higher productivity.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Mahmoud stated this during the Opening Ceremony of a two-day Sorghum Seed and Input Fair taking place in Kano.

The Minister who was represented by a Deputy Director in the Ministry, Dr Abdulkareem Durosinlorun said federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was working tirelessly in promoting Sorghum Production and Value Addition towards achieving self sufficiency and meeting industrial requirements in the Country.

He said Nigeria was the third largest Sorghum producer in the World, saying the Crop serves as a staple food to Millions of people living in Northern Nigeria, hence efforts needed to be put in place in ensuring that Sorghum Production was been enhanced in the region.

“It is well known that the effects of Covid 19 pamdemic, insurgency, banditry and other challenges have negative impact on food security, hence new innovation has to be applied to counter the incidences.”

Earlier, the Kano State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Abba Gana Yamani said the awareness training was very timely, geared towards sensitizing Sorghum farmers on modern techniques of using certified seeds for higher productivity.

He charged the participants of the Training to make maximum utilization of the opportunity, with the aim of achieving the stated Goals.

In a remark, the National President Sorghum, Millet Farmers Association of Nigeria, Yusif Adams aplauded the foresight and commitment of the federal government for organizing the awareness campaign.

He advised participants of the training to step down the experience they acquire to their colleagues, with the aim of enhancing food security in the Country.

Participants at the training were drawn from NorthWest and Northeastern part of the Country.
