Uplifting the standard of education and promoting the welfare of teachers has been identified as one of the cardinal objectives of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration.
The Kano state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar stated this during the 4th public lecture organized by the faculty of Education Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano to commemorate World Teacher’s Day.
According to the Commissioner, Kano state under the leadership of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had mapped out strategies aimed at ensuring that teachers are at the fore front of every meaningful development.
She described teachers as the backbone of any meaningful society as such there was the urgent need to boost their morale through training and retraining as well as provision of adequate learning materials according to global world practices.
In a remark, the Vice Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, Professor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa explained that the institution was committed to providing sound and quality education to the general public.
The Vice Chancellor who was represented by Dean, Faculty of Education, Malam Kamilu Sani said 90% of courses offered by the University have been fully accredited.
He pointed out that the University currently runs 33 programs including MBBS and other related science subjects.
In his paper titled “Reimagining Education: Mobile technologies, social media and post covid Digital learning” the former Vice Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria and a lecturer with the department of information and media studies Bayero University Kano, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu explained the major role of social media in educating the public especially during the covid 19 pandemic.
He said the covid pandemic had made mobile devices more dynamic despite the fact that literacy is required for learning with technologies to be possible, which involves a two step process.
The world teachers day 2021 themed “Teachers at the heart of education recovery” was marked by paper presentations and presentation of awards to the chief Imam of Kano central mosque, Professor Sani Zahradeen, Kano state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development Dr. Zahra’u Muhammad Umar, Chairman Northwest and Kano state council of Ulama, Sheikh Ibrahim Khalil, Professor Ahmed Tijjani and Alhaji Ado Gwaram for their immense contributions to the development of the state.
