Jigawa state government says it has distributed over 12 million tree seedlings for planting in the last six years as part of effort to fight desertification and sustain a clean and healthy environment in the state.

Governor Badaru Abubakar disclosed this in Maigatari at the flag off of the distribution of tree seedlings for planting across the state.

He said in addition his administration had constructed over 35 kilometers of drainages and reclaimed over 4,200 number square meters of eroded areas as part of effort to avert environmental degradation.

According to him, the state government had spent about 35 millions naira on the embankment of River Hadejia as well as clearing of about 180 kilometer of typa grass in 13 communities within 15 local government areas.

He added that more than 23,000 wood economy cooking stoves were produced and distributed as part of measures to reduce the rampant felling of trees.

In his welcome address, the state commissioner for environment Alhaji Ibrahim Baba Chai- Chai said the ministry had produced 2 million trees seedlings for distribution this year.

Also speaking, the chairman of Maigatari local government Mallam Uzairu Nadabo commended the state government for choosing Maigatari to flag off the exercise and the launching of this year’s tree planting campaign in the area.
