The Secretary of the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission-NASIEC, Barrister Muhammed Abubakar Opu has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ramhan Nansel stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Lafia the State Capital.

The statement explained that the gunmen numbering about five stormed the house of the NASIEC Secretary located at Bakin Rijiya Village, along Lafia-Shendam Road around 11.45 pm last night and kidnapped him to an unknown destination.

The PPRO maintained that on receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adesina Soyemi immediately led a detachment of Police personnel from the Command’s Anti Kidnapping unit, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit and other tactical units to the scene where he is suspected to have been held captive by his abductors.

ASP Nansel said the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department has also been directed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter in order to rescue the victim and arrest the perpetrators.

He appealed to members of the public to assist the police with useful information that would help to arrest the criminal elements and rescue the victim.

NASIEC had announced that the commission will conduct Local Government elections across the thirteen LGAs of the State October 6th.
