60 persons have been killed over a cholera outbreak in some communities in Katsina State.

Commissioner for Health, Yakubu Danja disclosed this at the 2021 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the Katsina Secretariat complex.

He said drugs have been purchased for distribution to hospitals across the State to curtail the spread of the disease.

Danja further explained that health education on prevention and management of the disease and active case search and surveillance were ongoing across the 34 Local Government Areas.

According to him: “We are aware of the current outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting that is affecting some communities in the state.

“Presently, we have over 1,400 confirmed cases of cholera with over 60 recorded dead.”

The Commissioner also counselled residents to ensure proper environmental sanitation, frequent hand washing, proper food hygiene, washing of all fruits and vegetables before eating, and proper cooking of food items.

He tasked food vendors to cover their food items to avoid contact with flies, open defecation, and drinking contaminated water.

Some residents said they are living in fear following the outbreak.
