Traders at Kantin Kwari market have staged a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction over a building being constructed at Layin Ta Anbo within the market.

According to the traders, most of them display their wares on tables within the premises but woke up to discover that a foundation for the building of shops has commenced in the middle of the night.

They pointed out that Layin Ta Anbo is one of the routes used for transportion of goods and services within the market.

” We believe that the Governor is not aware of what is happening in the market as the buliding will affect over 5,000 ‘yan tebura” .

One of the leaders of Kantin Kwari traders, Alhaji Balarabe Tatari who spoke to Radio Nigeria explained that building of shops in the middle of the market may lead to congestion, flooding and other environmental hazards especially during rainy season as the market lacks proper drainges as well as routes for easy transportation of goods and services.

He debunked rumours circulating that the government had decided to build the shops after discovering that some of the traders were giving out their enclosures for rent.

Alhaji Balarabe called on the State government to come to their aid as many of the small scale and medium enterprise traders would lose their source of livelyhood due to the buliding of the shops.

” Layin Ta Anbo is used as a route to the market, whenever there’s a fire outbreak or something similar to that, the traders remove their tables to enable the fire service vehicles gain access into the market”.

Responding, the senior special assistant to Kano State Governor on Kwari Market, Alhaji Usman Nagoda said he was informed about the protest, but promised to investigate and carry out the necessary action as the Kano State government will not relent in it’s efforts of boosting commercial activities.

“I was informed about the protest and will visit the market to investigate and take the necessary action”.
