Independent National Electoral Commission ,INEC says the country now has 176,846 polling units.

INEC chairman Professor Mahmoud Yakubu stated this in Abuja during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners.

He said about 749 polling units were removed from inappropriate locations; 232 from Private residences, 145 from Royal Palaces and Mosques, 21 from Churches and 9 from Shrines.

Professor Mahmoud Yakubu explained that the remaining 336 polling units were relocated for various reasons which include distance, difficult terrain, congestion, communal conflict, new settlements and general insecurity.

According to him, beginning from the Anambra Governorship election scheduled for 6th November this year, the Commission would no longer use voting points during elections.

He expressed gratitude to stakeholders for making the exercise a stress free one.

INEC chairman Professor Mahmoud Yakubu also announced that the Commission would conduct two Governorship election in Ekiti and Osun State next year.

He said, that of Ekiti would take place on the 18th June 2022 while Osun will take place on the 16th July 2022.

Professor Yakubu noted that the time table and schedule of activities for the two elections have been uploaded to the Commission’s website.
