The Nigeria Labour Congress-NLC has enjoined all workers in Kano State on the occasion of this year’s May Day 2021 to hold the event indoors and virtually over the Coronavirus pandemic and hardship during this period of Ramadan.

Kano State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir announced this during a pre-May Day symposium, titled, “COVID-19 pandemic, social and economic challenges for decent jobs and workers welfare”.

He said the inability to fully implement a minimum wage for workers in Kano was not in tune with the economic realities faced by workers.

Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir said May Day which normally holds on the streets with solidarity marches and protests is suspended due to coronavirus this year.

He noted that during the celebration of 2021 May Day, the NLC would honour dedicated workers at the Kano State government house with the governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in attendance.

Delivering a pre-May Day symposium paper, former vice Chairman of NLC Kano State chapter Comrade Auwalu Mudi Yakasai called for a united struggle for a national living minimum wage as prescribed by the constitution.

He said Nigerian workers should unite and come out with a national living minimum wage, because the ruling class had institutionalized poverty, unemployment and illiteracy among others.

In his remarks, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje reiterated the commitment of his administration to implement the N30,600 minimum wage is still in line with the state government agreement with Workers, immediately the monthly revenue increases.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, added that the Ganduje led administration will always prioritize workers welfare.
