Nigerian Army has been recognised as Africa’s Best National Army in Counter-Terrorism Operations for 2025.

The award was conferred by African Security Watch in recognition of the Army’s achievements in combating terrorism and violent extremism, as well as its contribution to peace and security in Nigeria and across the region.

The award was presented to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

It was handed over by Major General Teriworie Gagariga, who had earlier received it on behalf of the Nigerian Army during the African Security Watch Awards Ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia.

Receiving the award, Lieutenant General Shaibu said the honour reflects the effectiveness of the Army’s counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations and its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and citizens.

The Chief of Army Staff, in a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele dedicates the award to officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to their families for their sacrifices.

He reaffirmed the Army’s resolve to sustain its operational successes through improved intelligence gathering, stronger collaboration with other security agencies, enhanced training, better welfare for personnel and the acquisition of modern equipment.

African Security Watch said the Nigerian Army earned the continental recognition because of its outstanding performance in joint military operations, intelligence-led campaigns, civil-military cooperation and capacity development.

The organisation added that the Army has become a model of professionalism and operational excellence in counter-terrorism across Africa.
