United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and commitment to tackling terrorism and strengthening security in Nigeria.
In a letter to President Tinubu, President Trump praised the Nigerian leader’s efforts to address security challenges, particularly attacks on vulnerable communities, and reaffirmed the United States’ support in the fight against terrorism.
The commendation comes amid growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States under a Joint Working Group established by both countries to enhance intelligence sharing, training and joint operations against terrorist groups.
As part of the collaboration, both countries have recorded successes in counter-terrorism operations, including a coordinated operation in the Lake Chad region that neutralised a top ISIS commander and several of his associates.
The partnership was further strengthened last week with the visit of the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, to Abuja, where he pledged deeper cooperation with Nigeria in security and other strategic areas.
President Trump also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing the 2026 US-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap, aimed at improving the capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria through specialised training, intelligence support and operational collaboration.
