The Kano State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources has raised concern over the outbreak of Tuta Absoluta pest, popularly known as “Sharon,” which is currently affecting tomato farms across several local government areas in Kano State.
Chairman of the committee and member representing Karaye Constituency, Ahmed Ibrahim, disclosed this while presenting the committee’s report before the House.
According to him, the committee was mandated to investigate the infestation following a motion of urgent public importance raised by Ali Lawan Kiyawa concerning the spread of the pest in Bagwai and Shanono areas.
Ahmed Ibrahim stated that findings from the committee’s assessment revealed that the outbreak had spread to major tomato-producing local government areas, including Bagwai, Shanono, Rogo, Tofa, Bunkure, Kura, Garun Malam, Rano and Kibiya, as well as parts of Tudun Wada and Dawakin Kudu.
He explained that Tuta Absoluta attacks tomato crops at all stages of growth by destroying leaves, stems, flowers and fruits, leading to significant crop losses when not properly controlled.
“The outbreak has severe consequences not only for farmers but for the state and the nation at large, causing shortage of tomatoes and increase in prices nationwide,” he said.
The lawmaker urged the House to call on the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate measures to contain the spread of the pest.
Among the committee’s recommendations were the urgent provision of resources to the Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, including approved insecticides, pheromone traps, sprayers, protective equipment and other materials needed to manage the outbreak.
The committee also recommended the deployment of extension workers and technical personnel to farming communities for early detection and management of crop diseases.
Other recommendations included stronger collaboration between KNARDA and local government councils to sensitise farmers on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), enforcement against fake or substandard agrochemicals, and improved support for agricultural research institutions.
The committee further called for relief assistance to affected farmers in order to reduce losses and sustain tomato production across the state.
Ahmed Ibrahim appealed to the state government to treat the matter with urgency in the interest of food security and agricultural development in Kano State.
