A youth leader in Zamfara State, Comrade Umar Mahmud Umar, has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its stakeholders in the state to uphold the principles of fairness, equity, and internal democracy, particularly in creating opportunities for young people.
He made the call during a news briefing held in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, where he formally declared his intention to contest for the Gusau I Constituency seat in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, representing Tudun Wada Ward in Gusau Local Government Area, in the 2027 general elections.
Comrade Umar said greater inclusion of young people in governance would enable them to contribute in addressing pressing challenges such as organized crime, drug abuse, kidnapping, illegal mining, school dropout, and unemployment through practical, policy-driven reforms and effective legislative action.
“With youth representation at the State House of Assembly, we are committed to developing a comprehensive State Action Plan on Youth Development, with clear frameworks, standard operating procedures, and sustainable strategies to strengthen the youth ecosystem and drive inclusive growth,” he said.
He added that his aspiration is driven by a desire to contribute to a legislature, united by purpose, guided by competence, and committed to delivering tangible outcomes for constituents.
Comrade Umar Mahmud while highlighting his experience, noted that, he has spent nearly a decade teaching english language, mentoring students and young people in leadership and public speaking, as well as participating in humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding initiatives across the state.
“Through these efforts, we have impacted over 10,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries and facilitated projects and partnerships valued at over one million United States dollars to support peacebuilding, youth development, and community resilience in Zamfara,” he stated.
He stressed that, the current political realities demand lawmakers who can rise above division, strengthen institutions, and restore public confidence in governance.
The youth leader also endorsed Governor Dauda Lawal for a second term, citing what he described as achievements in governance reforms, infrastructural development, fiscal responsibility, and youth-focused initiatives.
According to Umar, Zamfara State requires stability, consistency, and leadership that prioritises the welfare of the people above partisan politics.
Comrade Umar Mahmud reaffirmed his support for the governor, pledging loyalty based on performance, integrity, and capacity to deliver, rather than political affiliation.
He further commended the governor’s commitment to youth inclusion but appealed for more opportunities, particularly in securing party tickets and serving as responsible legislators.
“We humbly urge the party to provide more space for young people to participate actively in the political process and contribute to governance,” he added.
