Bayero University Kano (BUK) has addressed circulating allegations linking an individual reportedly claiming to be a student of the University to acts of online impersonation and financial fraud.

In a statement issued by the University Director of Public Affairs, Lamara Garba, BUK stressed that the institution maintains strict standards of conduct, discipline, and character for all students.

The University emphasized that the actions of any individual student do not reflect the values or character of BUK as an institution.

He pointed out that, in response to the allegations, a preliminary inquiry has been launched to ascertain the facts. University authorities are reviewing the matter according to established rules and disciplinary procedures.

Recall that, the situation came to light after Professor Farooq Kperogi, a Mass Communication lecturer at a U.S. university, publicly revealed that a suspected fraudster posing as a BUK student had sought financial assistance over the years to pay school fees.

The lecturer discovered that the individual had used a false identity and was impersonating a female. Following Professor Kperogi’s post, others came forward reporting similar fraudulent encounters.

BUK commended the public-spirited efforts of Professor Kperogi and others who support students in need by assisting with registration fees and educational expenses, noting that such acts play an important role in expanding access to education.

The University assured the public that if the allegations are confirmed, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken under its regulations and relevant laws.

“Members of the public are urged to allow the investigative process to run its course and refrain from spreading unverified information”.
