The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the death of two teenagers who drowned after falling into a pond while allegedly trying to escape from suspected phone snatchers in Kano.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement.

According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, at about 4:04 p.m., when the Emergency Response Unit of the fire service received a distress call from one Muhammad Abba reporting an emergency at Ring Road Kureken Sani in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

The statement said a rescue team was immediately deployed from the service headquarters to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the team discovered that two 18-year-old youths, Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, had fallen into an open water body,”

The victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, of Unguwa Uku Quarters.

Preliminary findings indicated that the teenagers accidentally fell into the pond while attempting to flee from suspected phone snatchers who were pursuing them.

In another development, the Kano State Fire Service has rescued a man who fell into a well in Kano Municipal.

The agency said the emergency call was received, from Abdullahi Aminu, who reported that a person had fallen into a well at Durumin Zungura by Assahabul Khahafi.

Firefighters from the service headquarters were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they found a man identified as Shitu Balarabe, about 40 years old, trapped inside the well.

The rescue team successfully retrieved him alive and handed him over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, a resident of Durumin Zungura in Kano city.
