Journalists across the country have been advised to complement government efforts in the fight against insecurity by being fair, objective and responsible in reporting security-related issues, in the interest of peace and national unity.
Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal gave the advice while speaking to newsmen in Sokoto.
The senator said journalists must rise to the task of patriotism by carefully analysing and objectively reporting sensitive national issues, particularly insecurity.
Reacting to comments by former United States President, Donald Trump, who reportedly described Nigeria as a country of particular concern over security, Tambuwal expressed worry that the former US leader was misinformed about the actual realities on ground.
Tambuwal said the position earlier expressed by Pope Leo XIII, that Nigerians of all religions are victims of insecurity, better reflects the true situation.
Tambuwal, who is also a former governor of Sokoto State, added that journalists have the power to reshape the perception of the international community regarding Nigeria’s security for the socio-security and economic development of the country.
