Senator Simon Bako Lalong has described Alumni Associations as not merely beneficiaries of higher education but as strategic agents of nation building, serving as vital pillars for promoting national unity and development.

The former Governor of Plateau State made this known while presenting a paper at the 18th Pre-Annual General Meeting Lecture of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association, held at the University’s Assembly Hall.

Lalong noted that through their networks, expertise and influence, alumni communities play critical roles in strengthening institutions, mentoring younger generations, fostering shared national identity and supporting socio-economic progress.

He emphasized that by embracing their roles as leaders, innovators and ambassadors of unity, alumni of prestigious institutions like ABU can drive peaceful coexistence, national cohesion and sustainable prosperity.

According to him, the legacy of universities such as ABU continues to shape Nigeria’s intellectual, social and civic landscape, and it is the responsibility of graduates to ensure this legacy translates into tangible national transformation.

He therefore urged alumni to reaffirm their commitment to a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria—one where education remains the cornerstone of progress and development.

Dr. Lalong further stressed that Nigeria’s advancement is tied to the collective responsibility of citizens to foster unity, development and good governance.

He reaffirmed that alumni associations occupy a strategic position in influencing national transformation through their networks and social capital, acting as catalysts for social cohesion and sustainable development.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and Minister of Defence, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, described the event as a homecoming and expressed delight at the reunion.

He assured Nigerians that the present administration is working tirelessly to ensure the safety of lives and property, noting that several areas previously troubled by Boko Haram, kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities have now been stabilized.

The Minister expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will overcome the lingering security challenges in the country.

Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Ahmed Adamu, praised the Alumni Association for its consistent support, describing it as unique and focused.

He said the University management and entire community are proud of the association’s unwavering commitment.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the National President of the Alumni Association, Malam Adamu Mamma Kontagora (Barden Kontagora), expressed gratitude for the successful hosting of the Pre-AGM Lecture.

He described the presence of highly placed personalities—including the Minister of Defence, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, and the Emir of Zazzau, His Highness Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli—as a great honour, noting that their attendance despite tight schedules underscores their commitment to ABU and national development.

Adding colour to the event, a cultural show was staged to celebrate Nigeria’s rich diversity and to promote the message of unity and one Nigeria, further reinforcing the theme of national cohesion championed throughout the event.
