Federal and state governments have been advised to focus on protecting educational institutions rather than closing them, a measure described as counterproductive.

Financial expert and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of Kaduna State University, Professor Yusha’u Ibrahim Ango, gave the advice in an interview in Kaduna while reacting to the recent closure of unity schools by the Federal Government following student abductions.

Professor Ango stressed the need for adequate facilities and a conducive learning environment to ensure the protection of lives and property in schools nationwide.

He expressed surprise that development of the education sector now depends on intervention by organisations including the tertiary education trust fund rather than the ministry of education despite annual budgetary allocation.

The financial expert who blamed corruption for the various socio-economic challenges of the country called for proactive measures to deal with the problems to promote democratic governance in the country.
