House of Representatives has urged relevant government agencies to intensify strict regulatory oversight and ensure compliance with maritime safety standards to curb recurring boat mishaps across the country.

The resolution was part of the prayers adopted by the house in a motion of urgent public importance by a member from Gombe State Abdullahi El-Rasheed, during plenary session.

The lawmaker expressed concern how five persons, comprising four young girls and a boy, lost their lives on the 25th October, 2025 through a boat sailing across the Nafada River in Gombe state North-Eastern Nigeria.

Abdullahi El-Rasheed, told the house that it is high time for the authorities concern to check the recurrence incidents of boat mishaps across Nigeria’s waterways claiming lives and heightening tension over maritime safety, particularly in rural areas.

He appealed to the Federal Government to direct the National Emergency Management Agency and the North-East Development Commission to as a matter of urgency provide relief materials and necessary support to the affected families in the interest of humanity.

While adopting the motion, the House observed a minute silence in honour of the victims and pray for the souls of the departed individuals involved in the incidence.
