Kano State Fire Service has confirmed that a fire outbreak destroyed 529 temporary stalls at Shuwaki Market in Gari Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi confirmed the incident to Newsmen in Kano.

According to Saminu, the agency received a distress call at about 3:25 p.m. from Abdulmalik Muhammad of Gari Fire Station, reporting a fire outbreak at the market.

He noted that on receiving the information, Kano fire service quickly dispatched personnel and fire-fighting vehicles to the scene to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market.

The public relations officer pointed out that the market area, which measures about 3,000 by 2,500 feet and contains around 1,000 temporary stalls, suffered extensive damage, with 529 stalls completely razed.

Saminu however confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.

He attributed the cause of the fire to the activities of some drunk individuals residing within the market premises.

The  spokesman advised residents and traders to exercise caution when handling fire and flammable materials to prevent similar occurrences.
