The Senate has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in ensuring that the agency effectively fulfills its mandate.

The commendation followed a motion on the urgent need to recognize the Commission’s significant achievements in 2024, despite numerous challenges.

The Senate noted that the Commission’s success was made possible through adequate funding and budgetary provisions that enabled it to perform its duties without hindrance.

Leading the debate, Senator Emmanuel Udende from Benue State said the EFCC has played a vital role in promoting accountability, transparency, and integrity, contributing to Nigeria’s financial stability and credibility.

He also observes that in 2024 the Commission received 15,724 petitions, opened cases files for and investigated 12,928 cases, and filed 5,081 cases in court including the investigation and successful record of 4,111 convictions in the same year.

The lawmaker further explained that through these convictions in 2024, the Commission recovered substantial sums of money and stolen assets to the tune of over 364 billion naira and other currencies

The Senate mandated it’s relevant Committees to continue to provide effective oversight and legislative backing for the strengthening of the EFCC and other anti-corruption
Institutions with a view to promoting accountability, and good governance.
