Traders in Kwara state have been advised to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and adopt proper waste management practices to ensure a healthy environment.

The General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Jide Aina, gave the advice when he received a weekly sanitation report from the monitoring team in his office in Ilorin.

He emphasized that every shop and commercial premises is required to provide one or more covered waste bins, depending on the volume of waste generated.

Aina described this measure as a simple but crucial step toward facilitating timely and efficient refuse evacuation.

According to him , the sanitation report which covered major areas revealed widespread non-compliance with environmental sanitation standards, particularly in the disposal of waste and general hygiene among traders and business operators.

He urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure markets and business environments remain clean, safe, and conducive for both buyers and sellers.

The KWEPA boss reiterated that proper waste management is not optional but a civic duty, adding that the agency will continue to strengthen its monitoring and enforcement operations across the State.

Aina warned that non-compliance with sanitation directives may attract appropriate sanctions.

He called on market leaders, business owners, and residents to fully cooperate with the agency officials, assuring that the Agency remains committed to promoting public health and environmental sustainability.
