Progressive Governors Forum, in collaboration with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, has expressed its commitment to ensuring that specific functions of traditional institutions are enshrined in the constitution to enhance effective governance and management in rural areas.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, gave the assurance while briefing newsmen after a closed-door meeting with members of the National Council of Traditional Rulers.

The move is part of ongoing efforts to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes peace, security, and grassroots development across the country.

Governor Hope recalled that sometime last year, the Forum held a special meeting and consultation with the National Council of Traditional Rulers on the need to effectively involve traditional institutions in the management and governance of Nigerians at the rural level.

He stated that, in light of this, there is a need to take advantage of the ongoing constitutional amendment to formally recognize and assign specific responsibilities to traditional institutions.

” As a result a sub committee was set up and we met today purposely to work out ways and modalities to ensure that Nigerian Governors Forum will also come strong to support our Traditional institutions into having a define role in the constitution ”

Hope explained that during the meeting the traditional rulers made their submissions and had their support, assuring to forward the report to the Governors forum meeting and if adopted would follow it up to the National Assembly for inclusion into the new define constitutional amendments

He argued that going by the current challenges of insecurity, the ungovernable areas in the country must be properly managed by supporting the efforts of the security agencies with the use of the traditional institutions.
