The Kano State Ministry of Information, in collaboration with the National Broadcasting Commission NBC, has organized a two-day workshop for political activists and media commentators.


The workshop aims at sanitizing political activism and promoting mutual understanding among politicians in the state.

Participants were drawn from various political parties and radio stations across the 44 local government areas of the state.

In his remarks, the Kano state commissioner of information and internal affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Waiya, explained that at the end of the workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of ethics regarding political activism.

             He decried rising cases of defamation of character in the name of politics, saying that political activists, media commentators and political program presenters need the required knowledge on best practices according to culture and religion.

Comrade Waiya reiterated the state government’s commitment to partnering with relevant stakeholders to move Kano to a global standard and enable citizens to enjoy the dividend of democracy.

“We are not here to convince anyone to decamp to any party but rather to sanitize the system “


Also speaking, NBC state coordinator Malam Adamu Salisu noted that the workshop aligns with the mandate of the NBC, hence the need for collaboration with relevant stakeholders to achieve the desired objectives.

He commended the Ministry of Information for the initiative and urged relevant stakeholders to contribute their quota through promoting peace

The state coordinator highlighted that the activists, media commentators, and presenters have a vital role to play in Kano political arena.

Presenting a paper on promoting decent speech and avoiding abusive language in the media from an Islamic perspective, the chief Imam of Al-furqan mosque, Sheikh Bashir Aliyu Umar, identified three elements of information dissemination according to the teachings of Islam, which include honesty, accuracy and sensitivity.

He maintained that Islam forbids sensationalism and defamation characterized by political programs.

The chairman of Kano state political activists, popularly known as Gauta Club, Alhaji Hamius Danwawu Fagge, described the training as apt.

He pledged that participants would utilize the knowledge gained for the development of Kano and Nigeria in general.
