The Zamfara State Government has flagged off the distribution of irrigation and dry season farming inputs and equipment to 300 beneficiaries, alongside the disbursement of N150,000 startup capital to 1,000 entrepreneurs across the state.

Governor Dauda Lawal, who launched the initiative in Gusau, the state capital, described the gesture as a strategic intervention to tackle key development challenges facing Zamfara.

Dr. Lawal noted that the support was provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Zamfara State Government.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to the development of the state, saying that several empowerment programs have already been initiated since he assumed office.

“Part of our broader vision for a prosperous Zamfara is to engage development partners to tackle the numerous socio-economic challenges confronting our people,”

“Today, we are launching the distribution of irrigation equipment to 300 carefully selected farmers based on need. Additionally, 1,000 entrepreneurs will each receive a startup capital of N150,000 to help transform their business ideas into thriving enterprises.”

Governor Lawal emphasized that his government remains unwavering in its commitment to poverty alleviation, saying that, several poverty reduction programs introduced by this administration have already impacted thousands of lives across the state.

He pledged to continue partnering with the UNDP and other donor organizations to create sustainable pathways for lifting people out of poverty.

“From the outset of this program, I made it clear that transparency and inclusiveness must guide the selection process. Economic empowerment should not be politicized; every community must be carried along,” he said.

The Governor also disclosed that all beneficiaries underwent training to equip them with the necessary skills to manage and grow their ventures effectively. He assured Zamfara residents that more initiatives are on the way to tackle poverty and unemployment.

“We have established a robust monitoring mechanism to track the progress of this program and ensure it delivers maximum benefits to the people of Zamfara,” he added.

He expressed gratitude to the UNDP for its continued support, noting that the intervention would significantly boost the state’s economy.

In his remarks, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Abdulmalik Gajam, revealed that the UNDP is also constructing 158 housing units for internally displaced persons affected by insecurity in the state, in addition to the cash transfer and farming support initiatives.

Also speaking, the Head of UNDP for North-West Nigeria, Ashraf Osman, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting displaced persons and expanding its assistance into areas such as energy and trade.

He commended the Zamfara State Government for its renewed dedication to development and urged beneficiaries to utilize the resources and inputs responsibly to ensure lasting impact.

The Emir of Anka among other traditional rulers grace the occasion.
