As Nigeria joins the global Muslim community in celebrating Eid-el-Fitr, marking the completion of Ramadan, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Mr Abdulganiyu Jaji, has announced that the service is on high alert nationwide to swiftly respond to any emergencies.

Mr Jaji emphasized the urgent need for installing onboard cameras on tankers and articulated vehicles transporting flammable materials.

He stated that this proactive measure would mitigate risks, prevent accidents, and enhance public and infrastructural safety, especially during the high-traffic Eid celebrations.

Mr Jaji said many tankers fail to meet modern standards, contributing to accidents. He stressed the need for anti-rollover systems, anti-spill devices, and internal and external cameras to monitor driver behavior.

Recognizing the financial challenges of fleet upgrades, he suggested installing onboard computers to track driving patterns, improving safety.

“We are concerned that outdated tankers, due to weak enforcement of safety regulations, pose serious risks on our highways,” Mr. Jaji stated

“While modernization is essential, government agencies are committed to enforcing safety measures to enhance road security.” he noted.

The Controller General urged authorities and stakeholders to implement these safety features to improve road and facility security.

He urged the public to avoid store gas cylinders outside kitchens, and keep matches away from children to prevent fire hazards.

Mr Jaji also advised Nigerians to exercise caution while cooking, given the increased use of flammable materials during the celebrations.
