Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced its decision to grant tariff adjustment approvals for telecom operators, citing prevailing market conditions.

The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50% of current tariffs, falls below the over 100% increase requested by some operators.

A statement by NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Muoka, emphasise that the adjustments, based on the 2013 NCC Cost Study, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis under the newly issued NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification 2024

The adjustments aim to bridge the gap between rising operational costs and stagnant tariffs, which have remained unchanged since 2013, ensuring telecom operators can sustain service delivery and continue investing in infrastructure and innovation.

better connectivity

The NCC highlighted that the revised tariffs will support improved service quality, better connectivity, and an enhanced customer experience. The move also seeks to maintain the sustainability of the telecom industry, including indigenous vendors and suppliers critical to the ecosystem.

Following extensive consultations with public and private stakeholders, the NCC prioritized balancing consumer interests with industry viability. It mandated operators to implement the adjustments transparently, educate the public on new rates, and demonstrate measurable improvements in service delivery. Mouka stated

The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a resilient and inclusive telecommunications sector, designed to support Nigeria’s digital economy while protecting consumers and ensuring the industry’s long-term growth.

The NCC pledged continued engagement with stakeholders to create a telecommunications environment that benefits all, striking a balance between affordability for consumers and sustainability for operators.

It is noteworthy that tariff regulations and determinations are made by the Commission in line with the provisions of Sections 4, 90 and 92 of the Nigerian Communications Act NCA, 2003, which entrusts the Commission with the protection and promotion of the interests of subscribers against unfair practices including matters relating to tariffs and charges.
