President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the pivotal role of state governors in advancing Nigeria’s development and achieving economic prosperity. Speaking during a New Year visit by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, the President highlighted the critical responsibilities of governors in ensuring food security and driving grassroots progress.
Addressing the delegation, Tinubu underscored the importance of collaboration between federal and state governments to address key challenges, including local government autonomy, agricultural productivity, and economic stability.
He emphasized the governors’ control over local governments and the agricultural value chain, urging them to fulfill their roles effectively.
“You are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development, the Federal Government accounts for only 30 to 35 % of allocated revenue; the rest comes to you. The job is in your hands”, Tinubu said.
The President dismissed rumours of discord with governors on local government autonomy, calling for unity in driving grassroots development.
“Let’s work together and ensure Nigeria is better off for it,” he added.
Tinubu also reflected on his leadership, expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future and acknowledging progress under his administration. He confirmed plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of his nationwide tour and welcomed his recognition as ThisDAY newspaper’s “Man of the Year,” calling it a testament to the administration’s achievements.
NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak commended Tinubu’s policies, particularly in agriculture and economic restructuring. Highlighting a bumper harvest in Jigawa State as an example, Abdulrazak said the administration’s initiatives are yielding tangible results.
“We are getting more funding due to economic restructuring. Yes, there is inflation, but we are overriding it,” Abdulrazak said.
He assured the President of the governors’ unwavering support, particularly in enhancing local security and infrastructure development. The meeting emphasized a unified commitment to driving national progress, with President Tinubu and the governors pledging to build a nation Nigerians can be proud of.
