NEMA, SEMA Organise Disaster Management Meeting

The national emergency management agency NEMA in collaboration with the Kano state emergency management agency SEMA has organized a disaster management stakeholders coordination meeting.

Speaking at the event, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) territorial coordinator Kano Jigawa Dr. Nurudeen Abdullahi.

He explained that,the meeting was organized to remind stakeholders on their responsibilities regarding the impact of climate change and the expensive nature of environmental disaster.

Dr. Nurudeen pointed out that, that 14 local governments are prone to flood Aginji, Bebeji, Dawakin kudu, Kabo, Kura, Rimin Gado, Madobi, Sumaila, Wudil, and Warawa among others.

The coordinator stressed that, during the rainy season, women and children are mostly affected and urged people in flood prone areas to collaborate and take preventive measures before the rainy season.

The Kano state commissioner of humanitarian and poverty eradication Hajiya Amina Sani Abdullahi highlighted that the Kano state government has established a high-powered committee led by the deputy governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo to oversee the desilting of drainages across the 44 local government areas to prevent flooding.

She hinted that careful planning for preparedness and response can significantly curtail disasters or emergencies across communities.

Hajiya Amina maintained that the state government under the leadership of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is ever ready to protect the well-being of its citizens AG not natural and environmental hazards.

The executive secretary of Kano State Emergency Management Agency SEMA Alhaji Isiyaku Abdullahi Kubarachi urged the public to report emergencies and disasters to the local emergency management committees in their various local government areas.

He called on participants to step down the knowledge to the grassroot which would go a long way in alerting them to ways and means of averting danger and disasters.

The heads of the local emergency management committees who spoke to Radio Nigeria, the vice Chairman Dawakin Kudu local government area Shu’aibu “Yar Gaya and his counterpart from Bebeji Murtala Ayo described the meeting as apt.

They promised to rededicate themselves to their responsibilities to avert flooding and other environmental hazards.
